Crash (1996) - David Cronenberg

Quote:

Adapted from the controversial novel by J.G. Ballard, Crash will either repel or amaze you, with little or no room for a neutral reaction. The film is perfectly matched to the artistic and intellectual proclivities of director David Cronenberg, who has used the inspiration of Ballard's novel to create what critic Roger Ebert has described as "a dissection of the mechanics of pornography." Filmed with a metallic color scheme and a dominant tone of emotional detachment, the story focuses on a close-knit group of people who have developed a sexual fetish around the collision of automobiles. They use cars as a tool of arousal, in which orgasm is directly connected to death-defying temptations of fate at high speeds. Ballard wrote his book to illustrate the connections between sex and technology--the ultimate postmodern melding of flesh and machine--and Cronenberg takes this theme to the final frontier of sexual expression. Holly Hunter, James Spader, and Deborah Unger are utterly fearless in roles that few actors would dare to play, and their surrender to Cronenberg's vision makes Crash an utterly unique and challenging film experience.

Sinfonía Erótica (1980) - Jesus Franco

All of us Jess Franco fans know that he was a musician before being a filmmaker, yet we don't know much about his musical tastes. Jazz apart, what musical genre or what composers does he prefer?

The choice of using Franz Liszt's scores in some of his films could give us our first answer. Many Franco fans will remember the trumpet solo in the night-club where Miss Death performs her shows (MISS MUERTE, 1965): it's a transcription from Franz Liszt's Dream of Love No.3 in A Flat Major (as a matter of fact a nocturne), one of those piano "Love Melodies", once very popular, that all good-family ladies and girls liked to play in their houses. Franco has used this sentimental melody numerous times, in the most disparate transcriptions. It will be just the Dream of Love No.3, strummed by Lina Romay on a small piano, which will magically open a strong-box full of gold bars in the last scene of LA NOCHE DE LOS SEXOS ABIERTOS (1981).

Giulia (1999) - Roy Stuart

“Here is my final point. About drugs, about alcohol, about pornography and smoking and everything else. What business is it of yours what I do, read, buy, see, say, think, who I fuck, what I take into my body - as long as I do not harm another human being on this planet?” ~Bill Hicks

A nonsmoker is forced to find food, but for a smoker breakfast can be a cigarette and a cup of bad coffee. ~Brock Fiant

The Germans are the most philosophic people in the world, and the greatest smokers: now I trace their philosophy to their smoking. Smoking has a sedative effect upon the nerves, and enables a man to bear the sorrows of this life (of which every one has his share) not only decently, but dignifiedly. ~George Borrow

Quote:
The opening narration proclaims that this film was shot entirely in Russia by the Russian underground who risked their lives by crossing borders to aid in the production of this fine film. Names have been changed to protect the innocent, of course. After that, a guy named Scott who is banging a chick in his bed goes back to the beginning to explain how he wound up in Moscow. We cut to his Seattle office where his editor is showing him a film about the political problems occurring in Soviet Russia. We then learn, through this film, about how pornography shot in underground studios is flourishing in the country and has reached even into the inner circles of the Kremlin where orgies are being carried out! Apparently the person behind all this is a Russian sex queen named Librianna who strikes against the commies at will. Our hero is sent to interview the mysterious Librianna, who we learn is a master of disguise, before the red soldiers hunt her down.
