I was exceedingly happy to be able to find this old gem. In the early 70s, there was brief window when porn was where many cinematic experiments were happening. Some of them actually had some promise for being important. Perhaps the oddest is the porn musical. This is the most interesting from a historical perspective.

You have to place yourself in the era: a huge percentage of the population believed that the world was in a time of change for the better and this change had something to do with the overlap of free sex, drugs, some astrological appropriateness and the end of war. At the same time, the American government was hammering back on all fronts, while the Dutch and Danish governments were seemingly alone in supporting all four.

The Countess X” is one of the finest classics from the golden age of French porn. Beautifully shot on 35mm film, it and features some of the best actors and actresses from the period. This release of ”Countess X” was restored from the original negatives in HD-quality, making this the best possible version of the film.

Carlos Tobalina made so many porn films & videos that the wheat has gotten lost amidst the chaff, but THREE RIPENING CHERRIES holds up very well and deserves rediscovery. If it were not Max Pécas it would be an average youth romantic movie with some elements of crime comedy, but it is Max Pécas. So, all other genres may be passed in the lovely name of erotic. Moreover, it's one of the most successful Max Pécas' films: it even engendered a so-called "trilogie tropézienne" (with "Deux enfoirés à Saint-Tropez", 1986, and "On se calme et on boit frais à Saint-Tropez", 1987, which were his two last films). Well, there is even some plot in "Les branchés à Saint-Tropez": two young couples arrive at Saint-Tropez and settle on the villa of father of one girl's ex-. But this father proves to be a counterfeiter, and there is even a police auto-moto-chase in the final of film... Well, who will watch the Max Pécas' movie for the plot? The genuine subject is a sun, a nudity and a very French joy of life.

Constance (1999) - Knud Vesterskov

Constance is an erotic film directed by Knud Vesterskov and produced by Puzzy Power, a division of Lars von Trier's film company Zentropa. La Marge is the kind of film conventional film critics hate to review, because it does not quite fit into these little genre boxes they have in their heads.

In its cinematography and story-telling La Marge is very much like an Art House picture: we have emotions, tragedy, laughter, silence, pictures telling a story, plot twists, slow pace, all the ingredients you might expect in the most toffee-nosed productions only people with a university degree are supposed to enjoy. And yet, it is also a piece of erotica, shamelessly exploitative and very effective in its abundant use of (mostly) female nudity and its sex scenes.

The story centres on Alice Bonnard, a young girl attending Saint-Sulvien Girl's College, and takes place during a summer in the turbulent sixties. Alice comes homes to spend her holidays with her parents in the Landes region. They run a sawmill where they employ a young man, Jim. Business isn't going well, although Mr. and Mrs. Bonnard are too proud to admit it and Jim's nonchalant attitude about his job doesn't help things. Alice is attracted to Jim, but she's too scared to let him know it, believing that as far as he's concerned she doesn't exist. Her tumescent sexuality begins to obsess her. She becomes fascinated with the excretions, juices and smells of her own body as well as with the slimy oozings and putrid detritus of the natural world. The film gives few clues to distinguish the girl's fantasies from the events of her life. This is fitting, as the entire film revolves around the girl and her own perceptions. The heightened realism of the direction and cinematography produces a text that refuses either to accuse or to exploit.

"You oughta be in show business, baby!" That's been a pickup line of "producers" since the days of D.W. Griffith, though in Japan today the pick-up artists are likely to be young men with stylishly coiffed, tea-colored hair, tanned pretty-boy faces and dressed in dark designer mufti. Plays Itself (1972) was his take on the same territory as Anger's Scorpio Rising. When it opened at the 55th Street Playhouse, doubled billed with his Sex Garage, it was a case of see-it-now, or now you don't. The police shut it down - not for the notorious fisting vignette that climaxes L.A. Plays Itself (which is cut from the video versions), but for a scene in which a guy gets it on with his motorcycle.

Halvar Björks acting in this film must be one of the best ever performed in Swedish film. The film is still very interesting to see. People who can´t appreciate films about persons who are not as superficial and conventional as themselves will of course have some troubles with this film.

Starring Kay Parker, Taboo is one of a handful of the most famous porn films of all time, and although released in 1980, it follows on from the more artistic porn films of the 70s. Although not as artistic as films like Behind the Green Door, it does have its moments, such as when Barbara imagines being at the centre of the orgy that she earlier witnessed. However, it is one of the most genuinely erotic of porn films, exploring the 'taboo' theme of incest between a mother and a son. It's a shame only very few porn films are continued to be made in the same vein as films like Taboo.
